Why we like it
Hidcote is one of the major gardens of the Cotswolds and easily strong enough to shape a day around. Created by Lawrence Johnston, its design moves through a sequence of formal garden rooms before opening into looser planting and wider views.
Allow proper time
This is not a twenty-minute garden stop. Give yourself at least a couple of hours, more if you like plants, photography or want to stop at the café. The changing character from one enclosed space to the next is the whole point.
When to go
Different parts of the garden peak at different times, so repeat visits can feel genuinely different. Earlier or later in the day is also useful if you want a quieter experience in the most photographed areas.
Our tip
Hidcote sits close to Kiftsgate, so serious garden lovers can combine the two. For a more varied day, do Hidcote first and spend the second half exploring Chipping Campden on foot.
