Nympsfield Long Barrow is a simple, powerful place: a Neolithic burial monument set high on the Cotswold scarp with the Severn Valley spread out below. The mound is smaller and quieter than many headline attractions, which is exactly why it works as a short stop on a walking day or a thoughtful picnic destination.
Why go
The monument dates from the Neolithic period and retains its entrance, gallery and chamber arrangement. There is enough structure to understand how the tomb was made, but the surrounding beech woodland and views are what give the visit its atmosphere. Coaley Peak provides tables and space for children to run, while the barrow itself is a calm place to pause.
Make it part of a day
Follow the Cotswold Way south towards Stroudwater Canal or north towards Woodchester Park. The nearby Uley Long Barrow makes a natural prehistoric pairing, and Stroud is the place to look for a later lunch.
Plan the visit
English Heritage lists the site as free and open in daylight. Parking is adjacent, but the ground around the barrow is uneven. Keep dogs on leads, especially near the woodland edge, and bring a picnic or water because facilities are limited to the wider Coaley Peak viewpoint.
