A little more time
The Old Prison gives Northleach a genuinely distinctive rainy-day stop. The former House of Correction was designed by William Blackburn in 1791, and the surviving cells, courtroom and exercise yard now sit alongside a café serving brunch, cakes and lunch. It is practical as well as interesting: there is free parking, a garden and enough history to make a coffee stop feel like a proper visit.
What to see
Look beyond the café tables for the original prison plan and displays that explain how the building operated. The courtroom and cells are compact, so read the interpretation rather than rushing through. Outside, the enclosed garden and wagon collection give children space to move around while adults finish lunch.
Make it part of a day
Start with Northleach’s heritage trail, then use the Old Prison for lunch. The World of Mechanical Music adds another unusual indoor stop, while Bourton and Burford are straightforward drives away.
Plan the visit
The café and garden are wheelchair accessible, but historic cells and courtroom are more restricted. Dogs are welcome in the café and garden on leads, not inside the heritage rooms. The venue is open daily, though individual food service and special events can affect the rhythm of a visit.
