Why we like it
Stow-on-the-Wold is one of the better Cotswold towns for browsing rather than rushing from landmark to landmark. The Market Square and surrounding streets are packed with antiques, interiors, galleries, gifts and independent shops, so it works especially well on a slower day when the weather is mixed or you simply want a break from driving between villages.
The appeal is the concentration: you can park once, wander the square, dip into side streets and combine shopping with coffee, lunch or a pub without needing a fixed itinerary.
What to look for
Antiques remain a big part of Stow’s identity, but the mix is broader than that. Expect interiors, books, food, gifts and smaller independent businesses alongside the traditional dealers. The town’s visitor information and shopping directory are useful if you want to check what is currently open before travelling.
Pair it with
Make it part of a Stow day rather than the entire purpose of the trip: walk out towards the countryside, have lunch in town, or continue to the Slaughters or Bourton-on-the-Water afterwards.
