The River Windrush gives Bourton-on-the-Water its best-known scene: water running through the village centre beneath low stone bridges, with buildings and green spaces close by. It is a good first stop to get your bearings before choosing an attraction.
A simple way to explore
Make a short wander along the village-centre riverbanks, crossing where convenient and leaving room for other people on the bridges. Look back from a few different points rather than waiting for one particular photograph. There is no need to turn this into a long walk for it to feel worthwhile.
With children
Counting bridges or looking for reflections gives a small child something to notice. Stay close beside the water and roads: this is a working village centre, with open river edges, rather than an enclosed play area. We suggest enjoying the river from the bank rather than planning the visit around paddling.
